Castorbean ( Ricinus communis L.) plants were taken from irrigated and nonirrigated date‐of‐planting tests for 3 years to determine the effect of planting date on plant morphology. Planting date had no effect on plant height, except where drought was a factor. Hypocotyl diameter at harvest was significantly smaller with later planting dates. The number of nodes below the primary raceme, the distance from soil surface to primary raceme, length of primary raceme, and yield of primary raceme were significantly higher on June 13 planting date for three of the four varieties for all years. Morphology of the fourth variety, ‘Cimarron Hybrid’, was not affected greatly by planting date. Morphology of secondary and subsequent racemes was not affected greatly by planting date.
