The presence of nitrogen dioxide, a dangerously poisonous gas sometimes given off in silage fermentation, can be detected by exposure of moistened potassium‐iodide‐starch test papers to the air in the silo, silo‐chute or area. The test paper turns from white to bluish black almost instantly in nitrogen dioxide of moderate concentration and more slowly in very low concentration.
