A technique is described that measures the rate of ingesta passage through the ruminant by administering radiogold (Au 198 ) orally to bovine and ovine animals and following the time course of excreted Au 198 . The results indicate that Au 198 has a reproducible excretion pattern and is easily measured in the feces of ruminants. Diazepam was administered as a muscle relaxant to reduce the rate of ingesta passage. Comparisons were made in rate of passage between control and diazepam‐fed ruminants indicating the sensitivity of this radiogold tracer procedure.
