Synopsis Percentage recovery by the crop of N applied in the field at various levels was influenced by both the initial soil nitrate content and amount of added N. Practically all of the total available N (added N + initial NO 3 ‐N + N mineralized by the soil) not removed by the crop was present in the soil as nitrate at harvest.
