Synopsis Addition of (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 to a P band increased the absorption of fertilizer P by a single corn root in each of 3 experiments. The development of lateral roots on the single root was increased by (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 in the first experiment but not in the other two. It was concluded that increased root growth was not a prerequisite for the increased absorption, and that (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 had some specific physiological effect on the absorption of P.
