Synopsis The influence of Cl, NO 3 , SO 4 , and PO 4 on the uptake of Ca and Mg by sunflowers were studied under greenhouse conditions. Calcium uptake was increased only by Cl and NO 3 . Magnesium uptake was increased by all anions except Cl. In a lysimeter experiment, the vertical movement of Ca and Mg through the profile and into the leachate by the various anions was in the order of their solubility: NO 3 > Cl > SO 4 > PO 4 .
