Synopsis The Penman formula and several modifications thereof were tested under semi‐arid conditions. Neither the Penman formula nor any of the modifications adequately accounted for advective energy. Their deficiencies were particularly noticeable when high winds brought in energy during the night while other sources were supplying little or no heat.
