Synopsis Highly significant differences were found in the emergence percent and coleoptile length of varieties. Plant height was positively correlated with coleoptile length in 3 of 5 tests and with emergence percent in 1 of 2 tests. Coleoptile length in all laboratory tests was closely associated with average coleoptile length and emergence percent found in the field tests. The laboratory test that gave the best indication of varietal field performance was the vermiculite test at 85° F.
