Synopsis The rate of dry matter accumulation in corn plants was linear over most of the growing season after leaf growth was nearly complete. Differences in soil fertility resulted in different rates of dry matter accumulation, but influenced all plant parts similarly. The yield of total dry matter and of grain in plants from different fertility levels was proportional to the weight of leaves even though the chemical composition of the leaves was extremely variable.
