SYNOPSIS. Nine species of safflower (Carthamus) were ass'gned to 4 sections based on chromosome numbers and morphological characteristics. They are: in Section I, with 12 pairs of chromosomes, C. tinctorius (cultivated safflower), C. oxyacantha, and C. palaestinus; in Section II, with 10 pairs, C. alexandrinus, C. glaucus, C. syriacus and C. tenuis; in Section III, with 22 pairs, C. lanatus; and in Section IV, with 32 pairs, C. baeticus. C. arborescens and C. caeruleus, both with 12 pairs of chromosomes, were not assigned to sections.
