Synopsis Emergence of seedlings of three varieties of alfalfa decreased as depth of seeding was increased. Under field conditions emergence was considerably less than under greenhouse conditions. Seedling vigor was correlated with seed size, but there was no consistent relationship between seed size and emergence. Vernal and Ranger gave somewhat better emergence than DuPuits under field conditions, but DuPuits was slightly superior to the others in average weight of top growth of seedlings 56 days after planting.
