Synopsis A close relationship existed each year between stand density and early growth. Dense stands produced substantial quantities of high quality forage in the fall. Early growth appeared to be related to higher minimum and lower maximum soil temperatures, which were characteristic of the thick stands, as well as to the direct effect of plant competition. Stand density had a marked effect on the number of vegetative stems and the number of seed heads produced.
