Synopsis The cL r estimate of lodging resistance works well within groups of morphologically similar varieties of oats. The lack of agreement between groups was shown to be associated with variations in area of heads. In winter barley this factor was not as important as for oats. Data on the torque due to wind on various parts of the shoot appear to explain the aberrant readings.
