Synopsis An early hybrid provided less plot competition than a late hybrid in an interplanting of an early and a late hybrid over a 2‐year period. Yields averaged 5.9% higher in plots with early borders. Yields of the early hybrid tended to be lower if bordered on one or both sides by the late hybrid than if both borders were early, whereas yields of the late hybrid tended to be higher if bordered on one or both sides by the early hybrid than if both borders were late.
