Synopsis California's commercial varieties of barley, oats, and wheat showed similar yield reductions from yellow‐dwarf virus for which there is no universal diagnostic symptom. American barley varieties in general were more susceptible than California's. Since significant yield reductions were common, and reductions above 70% not unusual for susceptible varieties, yellow dwarf must be ranked as a major cereal crops disease.
