Synopsis Cold tolerance of the grass seedling decreases with advancing stage of the pre‐emergence period. Reduced tolerance is evidenced both by reduction and delay in emergence. Pre‐emergence cold tolerance may be masked by seedling susceptibility to soil‐borne pathogens if these are not adequately controlled.
