Synopsis Evidence presented indicates that a portion of the resistance to Pythium ultimum in corn seedlings resides in the maternal pericarp tissues and a portion is within the germinating embryo. The two are distinct and genetically independent. No evidence of cytoplasmic influence on resistance was found. Ear to ear variation was found to be closely associated, inversely, with variations in reducing sugar content of the kernels.
