Synopsis Data suggest that the undisturbed main stem of oats is not affected materially by tillers, although translocation of nutrients can take place under certain conditions, viz., when blades are removed from the main stem or tillers, and when panicles are removed and blades remain intact. Defoliated tillers benefited from an undisturbed main stem in order of their age. The performance of any stem appears to be influenced by the favorableness of conditions surrounding other stems of the same plant.
