Synopsis Analysis of 20 S 0 clones of bromegrass and S 1 segregates for fertility attributes revealed the following 2‐year grand means for all S 0 clones: fertility percentage, 52.1; number of florets per panicle, 288; and number of seeds per panicle, 150. Differences among clones were all highly significant in each of the 2 years. Compared with S 0 most S 1 families showed substantial decreases in fertility percentage and seeds per panicle. Genetic segregation for fertility percentage was indicated in all families. Florets per panicle and fertility percentage showed little or no relationship, while seeds per panicle and fertility percentage showed strong positive phenotypic and genetic correlations. Results indicate that fertility is moderately heritable in bromegrass.
