Synopsis Mutant alfalfa plants, first observed in a S 1 population, were characterized by an elongated hypocotyl and a chlorophyll deficiency. Data suggest that both of these characters were conditioned by the presence at one location of recessive genes in the nulliplex genotype aaaa . The gene symbol el was proprosed.
