NE of the breeding methods with grasses used in Minnesota 0 has been selection in self-pollinated lines. It has been found that there is a wide variation in seed setting from plant to plant and from year to year. This paper presents the results of a study made in 1943 and 1944 on the variability of seed setting of a number of clones in three species of cultivated grasses under various conditions of pollination. A study was made also of the relation between seed setting ability in these clones and pollen fertility, pollen size, and chromosome behavior at meiosis, including the production of micronuclei a t the quartet stage.
