I~IORIZONTAL or contour cultivation was recognized in the I I United States as a desirable practice for erosion control by Randolph, and advocated by Jefferson, before the year i8oo. This method of cultivation has not been generally used by farmers, and until very recently was not extensively advocated by agricultural specialists. Experimental field work on the desirability of the practice is of recent origin.
