found that potash fertilizers had a tenden~cy to reduce the quantity of water needed for unit dry matter production of crop plants, while Hartwell (2) recorded results contrary to those of Reed. Leather (3, 4) came to the conclusion that the addition of fertilizers and manures decreased the water requirement of plants grown in jars but had no marked effect on field plats. Montgomery and Kiesselbach (5) and Kiesselbach (6) have dealt with the problem of water requirement in America. They found that when manure was added to the soils of different degrees of fertility the water requirement was decreased, the greatest decrease occurring with the least fertile soil.
