In two earlier papers (2, $) some evidence was presented which seemed to indicate that the gene for black color was linked with a factor responsible for transgressive susceptibility to smut in the oat cross Black Mesdag x Gopher. In the meantime, certain backcrosses involving this same material have been made and their reaction to a mixture of loose smut (Ustilago avenae) and covered smut (U. levis) has been determined. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss the additional data.
