This investigation was undertaken for the purpose of studying the availability and nature of the soil phosphates and their distribution in the soil separates of certain Kentucky soils. The study was suggested by results reported by Roberts, et at. (8, 9) which show in all cases a positive influence of lime on crop response to superphosphate, but both a positive and a nagative influence in the case of rock phosphate. The nature and availability of soil phosphates have been studied by many investigators and reference to pertinent work will be given in the discussion.
