In soil science soils are classified on the basis of those distinguishing characteristics which may be . observed within their profiles and which have been developed under natural conditions. 'In dealing with such a classification its practical aspects can hardly be ignored. Thus there arises this question: In a given agricultural area, do the different kinds of soils which farmers recognize, particularly because of differences in handling and yielding qualities, correspond to types when they are classified according to natural and typical characteristics?
