Most of the so-called varieties of oats grown commercially in the United States at the present time are simply strains or races (jordanons) of a relatively few distinct botanical types. To differentiate these numerous strains by the use of minute, obscure and otherwise unsatisfactory, morphologic characters is not practicable and would result in still greater confusion of varieties and varietal nomenclature than already exists.
