The aim of this article is to trace the motives and ways of cooperation of Lesia Ukrainka in the St. Petersburg literary and political magazine «Zhyzn / Life», based primarily on her correspondence of thistime (1899–1901). The source analysis of the epistolary heritage of Lesia Ukrainka is used, it is based on the chronological and typological characteristics of the life and creative biography of the writer andpublicist; systematization of facts and statements related to the functioning of the magazine «Zhyzn / Life», its employees, the creative plans of Lesya Ukrainka. The main motives for Lesia Ukrainka’scooperation with the St. Petersburg monthly were the democratic direction of the magazine, the authority of the authors and employees of the magazine, the opportunity to be a principled reviewer and propagandist of Ukrainian and European literature, and material incentives.
