The purpose of this paper is to consider the proper treatment of short- andlong-fronted adjuncts within HPSG. In the earlier HPSG analyses, a rigidlink between linear order and constituent structure determines the linearposition of such adjuncts in the sentence-initial position. This paper willargue that there is a body of data which suggests that adjunct fronting doesnot work as these approaches predict. I will then show thatlinearisation-based HPSG can provide a fairly straightforward account of thefacts.
