In this paper we investigate the factors conditioning a morphologicalalternation on verbal heads in Lai. We show that this alternationeludes a simple characterization and instead exhibits a many-to-manyform-function mapping. We will further show that the facts can begiven a straightforward analysis in terms of default conditions basedon valence and polarity, together with various constructionaloverrides. Our analysis thus follows recent proposals in HPSG, inparticular Malouf (forthcoming), in using a constructional typehierarchy with defaults (cooperating constructions) as analternative to an Optimality Theoretic system of ranked violableconstraints.
