The article is devoted to the civilizational identity of Russia in the light of modern geopolitics, which is acutely relevant. Based on this task, the article proposes to change the approach to the study of the essence of Russian civilizationism, expressed symbolically in the question “who are we?”, which generates disagreements and leads to a dead end. A more responsible and projective approach gives an answer to the question “why are we?”. This question translates the study into the plane of the search for the Meaning of civilization and is more organically connected with the problem of identity, as well as geopolitics. It is emphasized that the question of Meaning is an important metaphysical question that also has an ontological dimension. Meaning is immanent to the Whole, permeates the entire civilization and is, in essence, a Law for it. He author comes to the conclusion that the meaning of civilization is most fruitfully revealed in classical Russian philosophy, which is characterized by attention to objective reality, the presence of the methodological principle “we”, the study of the topic of relations between Russia and Europe. These properties of Russian classical philosophy in their totality and interweaving help to approach modern geopolitics more consciously and contribute to the identification of the ontological meaning of Russian civilization at this stage. In this regard is noted, the intensive reactivation of the “enemy image” taking place in modern geopolitics, which has its origin in the theory of K. Schmitt. The “image of the enemy” is inseparable from the concept of war, the danger of which is noted by many military experts. In ontological terms, the main meaning of Russian civilization is to protect it from diverse threats. Comprehension of the metaphysical side of Meaning is no less important task. The universal humanity, the preservation of spiritual values lost by the West, etc. are derivatives of this Meaning.
