Respect and intimacy have been identified as two fundamental components of any truly therapeutic relationship. However, both phenomena lack a clear and precise definition that allows us to really understand what each one of them consist of when they occur in the therapeutic situation. This work offers an interpretation of therapeutic respect and intimacy in light of the philosophical contributions of the Catalan author Josep María Esquirol. In this context, some of the most important elements of the phenomenology of respect articulated by Esquirol are reviewed, linking them with certain theoretical-clinical proposals that come from the field of contemporary relational psychotherapy.
