In the analytic situation, as in any human relationship, patients express feelings, emotions, desires, demands and fears according to what the analyst awakens in them, with their general attitude, presence and words. This has come to be called the phenomenon of transference. And now we know that this phenomenon is closely linked to the relationship offered by the analyst and that, therefore, not all the psychic world of patients manifests itself in dealing with a particular analyst. Every patient lives in the world of life and in this complex world responds in various ways that go far beyond the narrow situation of the pure analytical situation. For this reason, the understanding of the patient's psychic processes must oscillate from what happens during the patient-analyst interaction to what takes place in the situations of their life in the outside world, and we think that only this alternative vision between one situation and the other will allow us a total understanding of the psychic processes of the patients.
