The skills needed by a corporate CEO seeking to guide a company ethically through a time of crisis bears a striking resemblance to the skills needed by the improvising musician. As in musical improvisation, ethical crisis management requires decision-makers to strike a fine balance between structure and innovation, between playing by the rules and adapting in novel and creative ways.
