The origins of this piece are simple: it was meant as a note to the musicians (and perhaps the audience) taking part in a weekly London improvisation workshop I first convened in 1999. These sessions followed the principles, practices, and theoretical insights of AMM and led to a concert at the 2015 Huddersfield festival of Contemporary Music, a festival celebrating the 50th anniversary of AMM. Audience responses suggested that this piece merited a wider readership, and after reading the original draft through again, I realized that a wider historical perspective of AMM was warranted. This memorandum is my contribution to such a perspective.
