Anan city in Tokushima prefecture, a natural-disasterprone area, was determined in this paper as a case study area, and a disaster knowledge magazine that edited the lore of disasters of the community was developed as a methodology for handing down the lessons and knowledge about natural disasters. Experiences and lessons from the 1946 Nankai earthquake and the 1960 Valdivia (Chile) earthquake that were extracted by means of hearing surveys are contained in the disaster knowledge magazine. Comments from residents who read the disaster knowledge magazine were analyzed using text mining and the usefulness of the magazine was investigated within the perspective of livelihood disaster reduction awareness. The analysis showed words related to livelihood disaster reduction awareness such as lifestyles, cultures, and communities were extracted frequently. The reason for this is thought to be that readers had opportunities to understand lives and culture at the time of disasters through the disaster knowledge magazine of their communities. The attempt in this paper can be positioned as an approach to understand livelihood disaster reduction awareness as well as lives and cultures of communities in times of disaster.
