This study is intended to find out 1) the types of errors made by the students, 2) the percentage of errors made by students, 3) the cause of errors, 4) strategies to overcome the difficulties. The study focuses on the description of error analysis based on surface category. The findings show that 1) the percentage of each kind of errors based on surface category: omission 36.48%, addition 11.44%, misformation 20.06%, and misordering 32.01%; 2) types of error made by the students are omission, addition, misformation, and misordering; 3) there are three cause of errors: interlingual transfer, intralingual transfer (overgeneralization, ignorance of rule restriction, incomplete application of rule, and semantic errors); 4) there are twelve difficulties and fifteen strategies to overcome the students‟ difficulties in writing discussion text.
