This study evaluated the presence of pathogens in Perna perna mussels farmed on the coast of state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. A total of 2,880 specimens of P. perna was collected from the main mussel-producing municipalities of state between July 2010 and June 2011. Analyses of hemocytes monolayers, tissue imprint, thioglycolate culture method (RFTM) and histology showed the absence of World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) listed pathogens. The Trematoda Bucephalus margaritae, the cestoda Tylocephalum sp., as well as the protozoans Ancistrocoma sp. and Nematopsis sp. were identified by light microscopy. The turbellarian Urastoma sp. and the copepods Pseudomyicola and Monstrilla were identified by stereomicroscopy. Parasitic castration was observed in mussels with high B. margaritae infestation.
