Matematika berperan penting dalam kehidupan, karenanya perlu mengajarkannya kepada siswa di sekolah. Setiap siswa juga harus dapat memahami pelajaran matematika dengan benar. Pemahaman konsep dapat diartikan sebagai kompetensi dalam memahami dan melakukan prosedur secara efisien dan akurat. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk (1) memperoleh deskripsi kemampuan pemahaman konsep (KPK) aljabar siswa laki-laki kelas VII SMPN 1 Gambut; (2) memperoleh deskripsi kemampuan pemahaman konsep (KPK) aljabar siswa perempuan kelas VII SMPN 1 Gambut. Metode deskriptif digunakan pada penelitian ini dan siswa kelas VII SMPN 1 Gambut sebagai sampel penelitian. Dokumentasi dan tes digunakan sebagai teknik pengumpulan data. Data dianalisis dengan persentase dan rata-rata. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa (1) skor rata-rata KPK siswa laki-laki kelas VII SMPN 1 Gambut berada pada kategori kurang; dan (2) skor rata-rata KPK siswa perempuan kelas VII SMPN 1 Gambut berada pada kategori kurang. Kata kunci: pemahaman konsep, aljabar, siswa SMP Abstract: Mathematics plays an important role in life, so it is necessary to teach it to students in school. Every student must also be able to understand mathematics. Understanding the concept can be interpreted as competence in understanding and carrying out procedures efficiently and accurately. The aims of this study were to (1) obtain a description about concept comprehension ability (KPK) in algebra of male students in grade VII of SMPN 1 Gambut; (2) obtain a description about concept comprehension ability (KPK) in algebra for female students in grade VII of SMPN 1 Gambut. Descriptive method was used in this study and seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Gambut as a research sample. Documentation and test are used as data collection techniques. Data were analyzed with percentages and averages. The results showed that (1) the average score of the KPK for male students of grade VII in SMPN 1 Gambut was in the poor category; and (2) the average score of the KPK for female students in grade VII of SMPN 1 Gambut is in the poor category.
