The article describes the features of the cognitive sphere of students with intellectual disabilities, and also presents the results of an experimental study aimed at assessing and developing the cognitive activity of senior students with mild mental retardation. In addition, the author outlines effective methods, techniques and means of working on the formation of cognitive interest in students of the sixth-eighth grades with intellectual disabilities in the lessons of the Russian language and literary reading.
