The article investigates an attempt to change the principle of rotation of the scientific and pedagogical elite after 1917 based on the example of the community of students and graduates of the Red Professorate Institute (1921–1938). It was a special higher educational institution where higher ideological cadres of the party and teachers of social sciences for universities received their training. Describing the students and their characteristics, the dynamics and statistics of their academic movement, the specifics of the subsequent employment of graduates, the author raises and answers the question — was the Red Professorate Institute successful as a pedagogical project? A statistical approach to studying it allows for characterizing the Institute as one of the state projects to update the scientific and pedagogical field. The study is based on statistics uncovered at the State Archive of the Russian Federation.
