The article describes the scientific-school approach as a method of historical and scientificresearch. The value of the scientific-school approach in relation to the study of domesticscience is revealed. Based on the consideration of new «dimensions» (or aspects) ofscience, a researcher can get a panoramic picture of its development in a scientifically-substantive,scientific-organizational, scientific-educational, personal-psychological and sociocultural«dimensions». A brief historical review is given, fixing some important milestones onthe path to the formation of the first Soviet scientific schools in physics. These schools played a fundamental role in the organization and development of physical science in our countryafter the October Revolution. The reasons for the loss of the role of scientific schools in the organizationof modern scientific research abroad are discussed. It is shown that the evolutionof Russian radiophysics is closely related to the activities of a number of scientific schools.Various «roles» of scientific schools that they played in the emergence of native radiophysics, the creation of its theoretical foundation, the formation of new areas of radiophysical research, the development of information transfer technologies, military technologies with a significantradiophysical component, the formation of modern educational and scientific radiophysicalcenters are examined. These «roles» may be useful in organizing research in our country.
