This report describes the case of a 60‐year‐old male who presented with a radiolucent lesion between his mandibular right premolars. The original radiographic diagnosis was a lateral periodontal cyst, but surgery produced biopsy material that proved to be an ameloblastoma. A discussion on developing a differential diagnosis is presented. J Periodontol 2003;74: 883‐886.
