Background: The goal of this study was to find a possible link between blood glucose levels and periodontal disease. Methods: In a prospective study the dental health of 10,590 military service men and women was examined. The relationships of periodontal condition, expressed as CPITN index, and blood glucose levels were tested. The effect of gender, body mass index (BMI), and smoking was also evaluated. Results: Blood glucose levels were significantly and positively associated with severe periodontal disease, men, and higher BMI. Smoking did not affect blood glucose levels. Conclusions: Blood glucose levels might be associated with severe periodontal disease. J Periodontol 2000;71:1521‐1527.
