A unique histopathologic appearance includes a striking intraepithelial edema associated with a focal area of acute and chronic inflammation. Inconclusive immunologic study of one patient indicated an epithelial‐connective tissue immune complex deposition suggestive of but not typical of that seen in pemphigoid.
