IN 1921, Gottlieb's discovery of the epithelial attachment of the gingiva opened new horizons which served as the basis for a better understanding of the biology of the dental supporting tissues in health and disease. Three years later his pupils, Orban and Kohler (1924), undertook the task of measuring the epithelial attachment as well as the surrounding tissue relations during the four phases of passive eruption of the tooth.
