If a population has multiple positive stable equilibria, this information can be useful in natural‐resource management. We describe a test for the presence of multiple, potentially stable equilibria in a single population. The test is based on the idea of critical smoothing. Critical smoothing was originally proposed for testing for multiple modes in a probability density function. The test is illustrated using data for the spruce budworm and the snowshoe hare.
