— The advent of affordable direct‐diode lasers changes all the rules for optical designs and the associated technologies that generate the images from laser light. These new lasers are forseen as driving fundamental changes in the size, power consumption, cost, resolution, and even the uses for pico‐projectors. This paper discusses these topics from the perspective of laser‐light‐illuminated LCOS microdisplays.
