A VA‐mode PI possessing photo‐reactive side chains, has the ability of pretilting LC without any rubbing treatment was demonstrated. With this PI layer, the uniformity of the pretilt distribution would be better than the conventional VA mode, which in turn leads to high quality and much reliable VA LCD.
