Abstract We propose a three‐terminal dye‐doped LC device that is switchable between reflective and transmissive modes without image inversion. An additional LC panel or optical components are not needed for the proposed device, differently from conventional mode‐switchable LCDs. Compared to the previous dual panel structure consisting of two vertically‐aligned LC layers, an enhancement of the transmittance by more than 4% was obtained because there is no increase in the light absorption by an additional LC panel.
